Halloween 2009

Our local community centre was throwing a Halloween party on October the 24th sponsored by a confectioner company (I think it was Cadbury). The centre charged $3 for children ages 3 –9 years of age so that meant $6 for us. I thought this would be a great way to let the kids enjoy all the fun and what fun they had. Son Son went as Wolverine, Dai Dai was dressed up as a frog and Moy Moy as Minnie Mouse.

Dai Dai, Moy Moy, and Son Son all dressed up to go to the community center's Halloween Party.

When we arrived, we headed straight to the gymnasium. In there was a jumbo bouncy castle. It was so big that the boys didn’t want to go in. They had various games set up for the children to play to win prizes (Halloween candy). They had one game where the child had to guess which of three cups had an eyeball hidden under; another game where the child had to pick out gummy worms from cookie crumbs; Spin-the-Wheel for your prize;  a skeleton puzzle;  a Pass the Pumpkin game (think Hot Potato);  and many more.

After we made our rounds, we headed out across the hall to the haunted house room. Did I mention that this party is for 3-9 year olds? I thought the haunted house would be fine for the kids. So. Wrong. The volunteers had dressed themselves into the grim reaper, ghouls, zombies and bloody corpses. Yeah…the kids were scared out of their wits especially when the volunteers jumped out at us screaming “Boo!”.  I won’t make that mistake again.

Then we headed to the science area (the community centre’s kitchen room) and made slime. They gave both boys a baggie of the slime which I promptly threw away (I could just see the boys making a mess of it in the house!). We then proceeded to the craft room where the boys got their hands, instead of their face, painted. The boys did a craft thingy with a pumpkin cut out. They even got a temporary tattoo.

The next room had a presenter with a large live snake. Unfortunately the snake was not liking all the curious little hands petting it so they had to put it away which was too bad because Dai Dai wanted to touch it. I can still remember seeing Dai Dai’s look of disappointment. Poor kid.

The final stop was the cookie decorating room. The boys each got to decorate a gingerbread ghost. They had lots of fun. While decorating his, Aaron munched on the sprinkles and candies that were meant for his cookie, which I guess for him is a good thing since he didn’t like the gingerbread cookie. Son Son enjoyed eating the whole thing (he started nibbling it at the party and finished it at home).

All in all, the kids had a great time. To thank me, they each gave me a kiss.

Two days prior to Halloween we carved our very first Jack o’Lantern as a family. It was tough. Son Son got a little too creative with the Sharpie and we ended up having a pumpkin with tattoo scribbles all over it.

Our first Jack o'Lantern at the house. The pumpkin actually had two faces. This is the back-side of the Jack o'Lantern. Spiderman eyes and web-slinging hand for a mouth. I know, there's a lot of sketching on the pumpkin.

We also decorated the house. The boys really had a lot of fun raking leaves to fill the orange bags as well as decorate the house with spider webs.

Halloween night was great. It wasn’t too cold and there was a slight breeze. The two younger ones wore costumes that were quite warm so we didn’t have to put a jacket on them. For the Wolverine costume we put a thick puffy vest to keep Son Son warm and he wore a pair of mitts. My mom handed out candies while we took the kids out to the newer development across the street. When we returned we noticed that our house lights were turned off. My mother told us that we didn’t have much more candy to hand out. She didn’t know that I had another box of chocolates set aside so we turned the lights back on and we were back in business. Actually, we went through the kids loot and picked out all the candies and chocolates we didn’t want them to have and threw them into the candy bowl to hand out to the trick-or-treaters.

The kids were happy and during their trick-or-treating, Moy Moy learned to stick her bag out and say “treat”.
